How to Safely Bathe Your Bird

Ok, ok—I get it, I get it.
Birds (especially cockatiels!) can be super dusty, and sometimes you wonder if your little featherball will ever look clean again. Not to worry, my feathered friend—I’ve got some easy tips on how to bathe your bird safely.

First, keep in mind that most birds bathe themselves in their own funny ways—splashing in water dishes, fluffing around in wet leaves, or even enjoying a light mist. But sometimes they need a little help from us. That’s where you come in!

🐦 Normal Bathing

  • Provide a shallow dish of lukewarm water (not cold, not hot).
  • Let them choose—don’t force your bird in. Some love baths daily, others only sometimes.
  • Mist option: Use a clean spray bottle with warm water and gently mist above their head so it falls like rain.

🐦 When You Need to Step In

If your bird gets something yucky on their feathers (like food, poop, or something sticky), here’s what to do:

  1. Use lukewarm water only—never soap, shampoo, or dish soap (they strip natural oils and can harm skin).
  2. Gentle rinse: Hold your bird carefully and let warm water run lightly over the dirty feathers.
  3. Spot clean: If it’s a small area, dip a soft cloth or cotton ball in warm water and gently dab/wipe.
  4. Drying: Let them dry naturally in a warm, draft-free room. Don’t use a hairdryer—too hot and stressful.

🐦 Important Tips

  • Never fully dunk your bird. They should always feel in control.
  • Don’t bathe if sick: Bathing can chill a sick or weak bird.
  • Consistency: Most birds love a routine—offer bathing chances a few times a week.

I hope this helped you understand what to do! If your bird has never bathed before (or is still learning and doesn’t really like baths), then be sure to check out our other post:

(ahem… sorry, it’ll be coming soon 😅).
