Bonding with Your Bird: Do’s and Don’ts

After getting your bird, you would want to have a connection with him or her. When you get a bird while it’s being handfed, this may be easier as he/she gets fed by you every day, therefore giving a special connection and getting used to you quicker. But when you get a bird that’s just been weaned, things can get trickier when it comes to bonding with him or her.

We have arranged a chart of do’s and don’ts when it comes to bonding with your bird. Please pay attention as even after bonding, when you do certain don’ts you may easily lose your birds trust.

DO’S

DON’TS

✔ BE PATIENT

When getting a new fully-weaned bird, be patient with the bonding process; it will take time. Getting too excited or forcing your bird to like you will stress your feathered-friend out.

❌ hit OR YELL AT your bird

Hitting or yelling at your bird will make him/her see you as a threat, therefore causing your bird to be fearful of you. This can make it difficult and long for you to be able to re-bond, or in some cases, it may cause your bird to lose trust in you; regaining trust will be tricky work. Depending on your bird, if you hit or yell at him/her, he/she might lose trust in you completely.

✔ PREEN YOUr bIRD

If your bird lets you, you can slowly (and gently) preen it. Simply stroke his or her feathers with your finger slowly and carefully so that you don’t pull on it.
Birds do this to each other to bond, so doing this lets your bird know you want to bond with him or her.

GET EXCITED AROUND YOUR BIRD

Getting excited around your bird would get him or her stressed. Just speak softly to your bird and remain calm.

✔ GIVE YOUr bIRD TREATS

After your bird starts eating in his or her new home, try offering treats whenever you’re nearby. This encourages your bird to start liking you.
